The Russian media outlet ‘Kommersant’ reported that the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office filed a lawsuit seeking the confiscation of Timur Turlov’s assets. Turlov is suspected of financing Ukrainian structures opposing the Russian military.
The defendants in the case are Turlov, his business partner Arkady Shchukin, and the companies W-Empirical Holding Corp., Freedom Holding Corp., and Freedom Finance Europe Ltd.
Turlov’s representatives state that they are not yet aware of the details of the lawsuit. A hearing is scheduled for October 15. A loss by Turlov in the lawsuit could result in the defendants being recognized as extremists and their assets being forfeited to the state.
Timur Turlov left Russian business, renounced his Russian citizenship, and received Kazakh citizenship in 2022. Turlov donated over two million dollars to the Ukrainian Embassy in Kazakhstan for the purchase of humanitarian aid. He transferred more than $720,000 to the accounts of charitable foundations in Kazakhstan that were supporting Ukraine during the humanitarian crisis.
The lawsuit was filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office less than a week after Timur Turlov became FIDE President.
