Timur Turlov won the FIDE presidential election, defeating Wadim Rosenstein 110 votes to 85 in the second round. The Kazakhstan Chess Federation president becomes the eighth FIDE President at age 38, succeeding sanctioned Arkady Dvorkovich.

Dvorkovich served two terms as FIDE President, starting 2018. He suspended his powers after the European Union added him to a sanctions list, with Viswanathan Anand assuming his duties as Deputy President. Turlov renounced his Russian citizenship for Kazakh citizenship in 2022, becoming the first non-Russian FIDE President in over 30 years.
