“It was a crazy game! I think it was always about equal, and then it suddenly exploded. I don’t understand what happened, but I think I managed to keep my nerve.

My coach found an important move, and it was a fantastic move to play. Magnus didn’t know it, so the move gave me a big advantage and made life much easier for me.

Afterwards, I was under a bit of pressure the whole time, even though Magnus played very well. I think at some point the position became more or less equal again, but in the end, everything turned into a mess.

My friend is helping me a lot here. Without him, I basically wouldn’t be able to make a single move. The organizers did a fantastic job, and I’m very appreciative of it. I’m very happy!”

Alireza Firouzja suffered an ankle injury on May 17. At Norway Chess 2026, Firouzja plays sitting down with his leg extended on an extra chair.

The Norway Chess 2026 takes place from May 25 to June 5, at the Deichman Bjorvika public library, Oslo. Alireza Firouzja leads the tournament, and Magnus Carlsen is in last place after one round.
