FIDE Operational Manager Sergei Indeikin passed away in August due to a severe form of malaria. FIDE reported the tragedy on August 24. Sergei’s father said that his son had been on a work trip to Nigeria.

“My son was on a work trip to Nigeria, after which he came to Uzbekistan and felt unwell there. The symptoms described to me by his colleagues from FIDE confirm that it was Nigerian malaria.

My son definitely got vaccinated: he specifically flew to Moscow from Pyatigorsk, where he permanently lives with his family. But he told me that this vaccine can reduce the level of danger, but does not guarantee one hundred percent protection.

He planned to get treatment. But the ambulance took him from home.

Now we will figure out why they put him on the flight. Because at the airport in Moscow he already felt very unwell, and there is confirmation of this. How could a sick person with a high fever be put on a plane?”

Sergei started working at FIDE events in 2021. He quickly became an integral part of FIDE operations at major international events. Sergei worked at World Championships, World Cups, World Rapid and Blitz, Candidates Tournaments and other events. He travelled across the world and made sure that events were conducted professionally, efficiently, and in accordance with FIDE standards.
