Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with FIDE President Timur Turlov in October to discuss chess development. The meeting took place at Tokayev’s residence, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace in Astana.

The presidents discussed the country’s growing role in the international chess community and further cooperation between FIDE and the Kazakhstan Chess Federation. Tokayev noted that chess holds a special place in Kazakhstan and serves as a tool for developing the intellectual potential of the younger generation.

Turlov briefed Tokayev on FIDE’s priorities for the coming years. Timur spoke about expanding chess in education, strengthening support for national federations, developing youth chess, creating more opportunities for international cooperation, and more.

The meeting concluded with President Tokayev wishing Turlov every success in his new role as FIDE President.

Timur Turlov is a Russian-born Kazakh entrepreneur and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp. Turlov won the FIDE Presidential Election 2026 by defeating Wadim Rosenstein 110 votes to 85 in late September. Timur has served as the president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation since January 2023.
