Magnus Carlsen participated in the PGX Podcast with Prakhar Gupta. Carlsen was asked to rank chess players from three generations.

Magnus ranked the players of the older generation first:

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen

World's No. 1

“I think, Kasparov, then Fischer. Probably then Karpov, Vishy, and then Kramnik.”

Then Carlsen ranked the players of the modern era:

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen

World's No. 1

“In terms of Classical, Caruana for sure first. Then Nepo, Nakamura, and then Karjakin.”

Last, he ranked the active young players:

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen

World's No. 1

“Currently, probably Pragg, Sindarov, Alireza, Arjun, and then Gukesh.”

Magnus’s ranking of the young players almost completely matches the Classical live rating. Javokhir Sindarov is World’s No. 4 and Praggnanandhaa R is No. 7. Carlsen placed World’s No. 21 Ian Nepomniachtchi above No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura.
