Russian GM Ian Nepomniachtchi shared his thoughts on Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov’s performance at the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026. Ian believes the most interesting part happened in the first half of the tournament, compares Sindarov’s performance to his own in Madrid in 2022, and states he will play in the next Candidates Tournament.

Russia's No. 1“I’m not a stranger here, just a tourist. Actually, I came here to bring Hikaru the best of my knowledge about how does the castle being proceeded…
On a serious note, I’m just really excited about this tournament, and I had some free time in my schedule, so I decided to come, watch, and witness history. But I’m probably late — everything happened in the first part.
I mean, it’s not like Sindarov is getting close to my record in Madrid. Everything that happened to me there over the course of 14 rounds, happened to Sindarov in just 6. This is, of course, very impressive and unusual. But now, I think, the hardest part begins for him - just waiting for the tournament to end. He probably already feels like he’s playing in the 14th round every day.
Would I like to play here? Actually, this year I’m happy I’m not playing. But in two years I’m going to play again. So, meet you there.”
The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 takes place from March 28 to April 16, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov leads the tournament with 7/9 points. Russian GM Ian Nepomniachtchi won the 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Madrid, Spain, scoring a record 9.5/14 points.
