Magnus Carlsen answered chess hot takes in a video on the Team Liquid YouTube channel on April 30. Carlsen shared his thoughts on professional players, his career, Chess 960, and chess in general.
— Chess is the most important game ever made.
— I disagree, no game is ever ‘important.’ This is a dumb take…
— Levy Rozman will become a grandmaster.
— ‘Thumbs down’
— Magnus is satisfied with his career.
— No, I’m not satisfied. I’m never satisfied. I’m very happy with a lot of my play, but I’m not done yet.
— The current generation of professional players is the strongest chess has ever seen.
— To some extent, yes. Because players do play better over age. It’s hard to say, but I think there’s a good argument that the generations of the early 90s and late 80s are the strongest ever.
— Hikaru is currently the second-best player in the world.
— I don’t think that’s a very hot take. The rating list and results in top tournaments of all formats say that he’s the second best. He’s had a fantastic resurgence of his career after Covid that has continued to this day. And he certainly deserves that!
— Freestyle chess is the best way to determine actual calculation skill.
— It’s very hard to say. I think freestyle says something about raw chess ability. If the take is more about that then I would rate this take nine out of nine.
— Chess is fun.
— That is not a hot take! Chess is fantastic!
