Kazakh GM Bibisara Assaubayeva recorded a video addressed to the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Bibisara describes her funding situation, says she hasn’t paid her seconds for the Norway Chess, and asks the president for help.
Bibisara Assaubayeva
Kazakh GM“Dear Kassym-Jomart Kemelovich, I am Grandmaster Bibisara Assaubayeva, ranked fifth in the world rating list. Ahead of me are only four Chinese players, I have already surpassed the rest of the world.
I am reaching out to you as the head of state with a request for help. One of the strongest tournaments, Norway Chess, has ended. I secured first place with one round to spare. The preparation for this important tournament came from my personal prize money and my parents’ money. My seconds and analysts for assistance and preparation for this tournament have not been paid to this day.
It is getting harder to work with sports ministers. The bonus from the Ministry of Sports for winning the World Chess Championship is $2,000, while an Olympic medal brings $250,000…
In Kazakhstan, aside from me, there are no World Champions among adults, men or women. After my second gold medal at the World Championship in 2023, I received a salary from the Ministry of Sports of 1 million tenge (~$2,050). With the arrival of Minister Myrzabosynov in 2025, my salary was cut three times. From the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, I have no salary and never had one.
On New Year’s Eve 2026, I won my third gold medal at the World Blitz Championship. This gave me the right to participate in the most important Classical chess tournament — the Women’s Candidates Tournament for the world chess crown. The salary from the Ministry of Sports did not increase.
In January, my coach and I met with Minister Myrzabosynov. We explained that the funds allocated by the Federation are insufficient: ‘Help!’ The minister gave his word, 100% support through the ‘Sport Qory’ support fund. We submitted an application to the fund, but received only part of the funds. Because of this, my seconds worked remotely. I was the only chess player who could not bring seconds to such important events. And I finished second in the tournament.
Major competitions, preparation, and lots of work lie ahead. What should I do, Mr. President?”
Bibisara Assaubayeva’s mother, Liana Tanzharikova, criticized the Kazakhstan Chess Federation’s funding system in April. Liana cited a lack of stable payments, pointed to difficulties receiving bonuses, and stated that Assaubayeva has no salary from the federation.
Kazakh GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (2537 live) is Kazakhstan’s No. 1 female chess player and a three-time World Blitz Champion. After her victory at Norway Chess 2026, Bibisara is 12 points behind World’s No. 4, Zhu Jiner, in the live rating.
