Ian Nepomniachtchi
Russia's No. 1“[Question: How happy are you with your performance as playing on the first board so far?]
Not really. I needed to win that position I had against Magnus. And then I got lucky in the next game against Sindarov.
In the first four games, I think I had only one truly good game in terms of quality – against Magnus. Aside from that, I had some troubles against Firouzja and against Abdusattorov. Against MVL, it was fine, but I tried to push for a win with black and ended up just creating problems for myself.
The result is fine, but the quality of my play is a bit lower than I expected, to say the least. Maybe it will be better in the second half of the tournament.”
The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2026 takes place from September 5 to 13 in Bengaluru, India. Ian Nepomniachtchi’s team, Ganges Grandmasters, is in fourth place with 9 points after 4 days.
