On the evening of December 25, Anish Giri commented on Magnus Carlsen’s statement, which cast doubt on his chances of winning the Candidates Tournament, in a Chess.com YouTube interview on December 24. In this interview, Magnus named only three favorites to win the tournament, while all others, including Anish Giri, he marked as unlikely to win.

Dutch GM Anish Giri qualified for the Candidates Tournament by taking first place in the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss. The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 takes place from March 29 to April 15 at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus.
