“[Question: The final position was a Zugzwang of sorts. How do you feel?] The game was completely crazy. It was some preparation of his and I had no clue.

I was figuring it out over the board. I had about 15 minutes disadvantage compared to him in this time control. And the funny thing is, this exact same position was in the Nihal Sarin versus Anish Giri game. Which I had no clue because I had no time to look up!

And I would have regretted not looking up if I had lost. I don’t know if I played well but it was thrilling. And no wonder my smart tracker says I’m aging fast. If I play like this, it’s bound to happen.”

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2026 takes place from September 5 to 13 in Bengaluru, India. Time control for the event is Rapid 20+0, with a 2-second increment from move 41.

31-year-old Vidit Gujrathi defeated Daniil Dubov in Round 3 in 54 moves. Vidit’s team, Alpine APL Pipers, leads the event with 9 points after 3 days.
