Ian Nepomniachtchi commented on Nodirbek Abdusattorov’s moves in their game at the UzChess Cup 2026. Nepo says Abdusattorov has strangely moved pieces against him multiple times, and notes that Nodirbek Yakubboev made similar moves.

Russia's No. 1“Nodirbek maneuvered with his Knight against me at the end of the game… He placed it on one square, then returned it to a normal square. Instead of a losing move he supposedly intended to make, he played a normal one.
This, of course, looks very funny, because he’s been doing this for about ten games against me. I don’t see any point in it, but if he likes it, then by all means. Generally, this is a common practice with both Yakubboev and Abdusattorov. Both Bishops were first placed on one square, and then they played on the right square.
I don’t understand what this is all about. But, generally speaking, if they like it that way… It seems like it’s not against the rules. The main thing is to not make the same mistake by accident. Otherwise, it would be a shame, right?”
The UzChess Cup 2026 took place from June 7 to 15 at the Crowne Plaza, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Ian Nepomniachtchi finished 3rd, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov finished 6th. Abdusattorov and Nepo played their game draw their game. In round 8, Nodirbek touched his King and was forced to move it. Any King move in the position was losing, and Abdusattorov resigned.
