Russia’s National Coach GM Vladimir Potkin discussed Hikaru Nakamura’s chances at the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Potkin says he doesn’t believe Hikaru will win, and notes Nakamura’s play at local American tournaments.

Russia's National Coach“Nakamura is a man of mystery. He’s an elite player, and very active one, especially online.
But the way he’s been playing classical chess against the ‘whipping boys’ recently leaves its mark. The environment shapes character: if a chess player gets used to weak resistance, they lose the habit of colossal pressure when the opponent is 100 percent ready from the opening to the end of the game.
I do not expect a miracle from Hikaru. If he wins the Candidates, it will be a mockery of chess. It would be strange if he spent so much time online, played classical chess against weak opponents at local tournaments, and then went on to play a World Championship match.
But at the same time, Nakamura has unlimited resources: he is a very wealthy chess player and can apply all his efforts to preparation.”
The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 will take place from March 28 to April 16, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. Magnus Carlsen voluntarily declined participation in the Candidates, which allowed Hikaru Nakamura (2810) to qualify for the event via second-place position on the FIDE rating list.
