Soccer player Lionel Messi posted a chess-themed video on his Instagram. The video is an advertisement for a new version of ChatGPT.

In the video, Messi asks ChatGPT for a strategy to play as Black. The AI recommended the “GOAT Horns” opening. This opening name is a play on Messi’s “Greatest Of All Time” nickname. The opening itself is a delayed Caro-Kann. In it, players play 1.e4 a6 and 2.d4 c6. Magnus Carlsen made the opening popular when he started playing it online in 2023.

The new ad was released two weeks after OpenAI’s release of GPT-6 with Intelligent UI. Messi’s video gained more than 1.8 million likes and 19.4 thousand comments on Instagram in 24 hours.

Lionel Messi is the second-most followed person on Instagram with more than 517 million followers. The ChatGPT video is the second advertisement for Messi centered around chess. Lionel appeared together with Cristiano Ronaldo in a Louis Vuitton campaign in 2022. In the joint photo, the soccer players played chess on a checkered Louis Vuitton briefcase.
