In a December 22 interview on the “Take Take Take” channel, Magnus Carlsen shared his thoughts on potential favorites for the upcoming FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships. He also addressed last year’s title-sharing situation at the end of the conversation.

“For the Rapid tournament, I honestly think that the rapid event is so short and random that it’s really hard to pick out players. Especially now that Hikaru and Alireza are not playing, I honestly think it’s just a crapshoot. Except for myself, of course. But even for myself, my track record is much better in blitz. You get a lot more chances to store your strength there, especially because there are more rounds.

Speaking of the young generation, it’s hard not to mention Sindarov after his performances recently. And, it sounds weird, but I think it sounds like a long shot, but I also think that Gukesh could have a good event. He’s definitely better at the Rapid than the Blitz.

What about Blitz — I think it’s even clearer that Hikaru and Alireza are number two and three there. So, in terms of people who can qualify over a 19-round tournament, there are only a few obvious favorites to begin with and I think now there really aren’t any. Dubov, maybe, I’m not sure if he’s playing. He has a good track record there. Maybe Nihal could surprise this time.

No co-champions this year, probably not!”

The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2025 will be held in Doha, Qatar from the 25th to the 30th of December with a €1,000,000 prize pool. The 2024 winners were Volodar Murzin (Rapid) and Magnus Carlsen with Ian Nepomniachtchi (Blitz), who agreed to the first-ever Title split.
