Russian Grandmaster Andrey Esipenko described the off-board difficulties he faced during his run to third place at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 in Goa:
Andrey Esipenko
Russian GM“Me and David Paravyan went to some restaurant. He generally likes spicy food, but I don’t really. David orders chicken tacos. I ask: “Well, are they spicy or not? Can I eat them?” He says: “Well, just a little bit spicy.” Then the waiter comes, I ask him too, how spicy it is. He also tells me: “Just a tiny-tiny bit, purely for flavor.”
They bring me this dish, I ate a little bit, and my whole mouth is on fire! I can’t eat anything else, because it hurts to put anything else from the food in my mouth. Yes, in that sense it was not easy - to find non-spicy food.
And by the end, it felt like a survival challenge. I just wanted everything to finish as quickly as possible.”
Esipenko secured qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament with his third-place result at this tournament. He called the success the main one of his career.
