American IM, content creator“[Question: Do you still have hopes of becoming a grandmaster?]
No, I’m too old for that. Maybe not physically, but young people have a lot of energy. There are formidable kids in Turkey, India, Iran… How can I compete against them? When I play well, I can beat almost anyone, but I probably will never be a GM. That’s it.
[Question: Does that cause you some kind of frustration?]
Not really. My life has been unpredictable. People recognize me on the street. I’m very grateful for having become a global ambassador for chess, because I love watching it and playing it. I’ve played at least one game every day for 10 or 20 years.
I hear stories from grateful people, because I helped them make chess an essential part of their life. If I were a GM, perhaps I would inspire more people, but I don’t think so either.”
American IM Levy Rozman is the creator of the GothamChess YouTube channel. His channel has more than 8.2 million subscribers. Rozman reached his peak FIDE Classical rating of 2421 points in 2018.
