Fabiano Caruana discussed his victory over Magnus Carlsen and his goals for the FIDE World Blitz Championship 2025 in a December 29 interview with Lichess. The World No. 3 commented on winning after a rook blunder and stated his aim to reach the Knockout stage.
Fabiano Caruana
World No.3“Of course, especially in the tournament situation where every game is so critical, I wish I have won without a rook blunder like this, but it’s normal when someone’s all on time, even Magnus to get nervous and to make mistakes.
About finishing the tournament, I just want to make it to the final four somehow. I don’t know how, but that’s the goal. Because in Rapid I was never in contention. It also doesn’t feel good, some major disappointments are normal, but when you’re never in contention from the first round — it doesn’t feel so great. So, at least I’m in contention now. And that’s a nice feel.”
The FIDE World Blitz Championship 2025 takes place in Doha, Qatar from December 29 to 30 with a €500,000 prize pool. Caruana’s highest achievement in FIDE World Rapid was the second place in 2014.
