Hikaru Nakamura commented on the second game of the “Hikaru vs. Awonder Candidates Training Match”. Nakamura tells that Awonder’s remark reminded him how long it had been since he last played the Classical Sicilian Defense, and notes that he accomplished all his training goals during the game.

World No. 2, streamer“After the game, Awonder asked me if I’d ever played the Classical Sicilian… It was a great way to make me feel immensely old, because I’ve actually played the system a lot, but the last time was around 2010 or 2011. Which, if you do the math, is long, long time ago. Perhaps before Awonder even started playing chess…
But overall, for me in this game neither the result nor the opening was important. I just wanted to play sharp tactical games, practice calculating variations, and work on time management. I think I achieved those goals, and I’m very happy about it!”
The Hikaru Nakamura vs. Awonder Liang Candidates Training Match is a three-day sparring event held from March 13 to 15, serving as a warm-up for Nakamura’s participation in the Candidates. The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 will take place from March 28 to April 16 at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus.
