“I play Classical chess terribly, and I think I’ll never play at a decent level again. But I’m still relatively competitive in Rapid and Blitz.

I feel like this isn’t a decline. I don’t get the slightest pleasure from playing Classical chess. And doing anything at a high level without getting the slightest pleasure from the process is impossible.

What’s the reason for this? I’ve thought about it. In general, I never really liked Classical chess. I’ve always really enjoyed both Rapid and Blitz. But I guess I’ve had it in my head since childhood that Classical chess is my life’s work, or something. That’s how I held on for many years.

During the pandemic and subsequent events, I almost did not play Classical chess, and that feeling disappeared, and the enjoyment from the process never came.”

Alexander Grischuk is Russia’s No. 9 and World’s No. 103. In December 2014, Grischuk reached his peak Classical rating of 2810 points. Alexander has participated in the FIDE Candidates Tournament five times, won the FIDE Grand Prix 2019, and became World Blitz Champion in 2006, 2012, and 2015.
