In a recent interview with Chess Base India, Freestyle Chess Tour co-founder Jan Buettner discussed the conclusion of the 2025 season, the tour’s impact on players, and his future role. He expressed satisfaction with the event’s execution and its contribution to the professional chess circuit.
Jan Buettner
Co-founder of the Freestyle Chess“In total, so many things can go wrong but the result of the tournament — is a dream, couldn’t be better. We have Magnus winning the tour, Levon winning the tournament. Vincent becoming number three and Javokhir is up there. We have the young kids, really tough, and they both are attributed to Freestyle Chess. They both personally and also the public say — what got them accelerated this year so far, was Freestyle Chess.
Right now, I need some rest, and then I’ll go full power to see where we take this ship, because I certainly don’t see in the next 10 years me running this thing. I have to bring it to a safe harbor for somebody to take care of it and there are several candidates right now. I’m looking for which way we are going. So, I’m already looking for way ahead but now it’s time to really look back and enjoy.”
Jan Buettner is the co-founder of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, a major invitational circuit featuring a 10+5 time control and a $750,000 prize fund.
