2026 will begin with a major Tata Steel India Rapid and Blitz tournament in Kolkata. The tournament in India will run from January 7th to 11th, ahead of the main Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee. After receiving the invitation to the Indian tournament, Hans Niemann shared the news in a post on his X (formerly Twitter).

The Tata Steel Chess India Tournament is an annual chess event held every January in Kolkata, India, featuring top Grandmasters in round-robin formats. In 2025, the Tata Steel India Rapid and Blitz were not held. In 2024, the tournament was won by Magnus Carlsen.
