“You guys are probably wondering why am I not playing in Norway Chess. I was invited to this tournament, and I believe Fabiano was invited as well. But ultimately, we both declined, I believe, before the Candidates Tournament started.

In my case, I declined because the tournament moved from Stavanger to Oslo. Stavanger was a place that was very near and dear to my heart.

But on top of that, with this event not being a qualifier and wanting to focus on the Esports World Cup this summer, I chose not to play.”

Norway Chess is an annual international tournament, first launched in 2013 in Stavanger. The event moved to the capital of Norway, Oslo, for the 2026 and future editions. Hikaru Nakamura has played in the tournament 4 times, winning in 2023. The Norway Chess 2026 takes place from May 25 to June 5, at the Deichman Bjorvika public library.
