Production company Boardwalk Pictures announced the premiere of the documentary series ‘Grandmasters’. The debut episode will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 7.

The series features GMs Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, and Hans Niemann, along with Chess.com co-founder Daniel Rensch, content creator Levy Rozman, and Freestyle Chess CEO Jan Henric Buettner. A central storyline explores the disputes between Freestyle Chess and FIDE. Liza Mandelup directed the series.

‘Grandmasters’ is the third chess-themed project to be released in 2026. Netflix released 2 documentary films — ‘Queen of Chess’ about Hungarian GM Judit Polgar on February 7, and ‘UNTOLD: Chess Mates’ about the 2022 cheating scandal involving Magnus Carlsen and Hans Moke Niemann on April 7. The first and second documentaries were criticized by the chess community.
