The event features two stages. In the Preliminary Stage, teams play Double round-robin with the top 2 teams advancing to the Playoff Final. Teams finishing 3rd and 4th compete in a Playoff for 3rd place. In the Playoff Stage, matches are played in best-of-two format. Time control for the event is Rapid 20+0, with 2-second increment from move 41.

The Global Chess League is an annual franchise-based team competition held since 2023. The event is organized by FIDE in joint venture with Tech Mahindra. The 2026 event follows the 2025 edition held in Mumbai, India, where the Alpine SG Pipers won the title.
