“I think it’s going to be difficult for me to qualify for the next Candidates Tournament. I was so lucky to qualify to this Candidates. The qualification cycle is highly random, which is kind of good for me, maybe because I am also ‘random’. But it’s just really difficult to make it.

I’ll do my best again, but it would be amazing if I manage to qualify again. I’ll participate in every stage. Even though the circuit features incredibly strong players who play a lot of tournaments, I’ll definitely try.

There are players who have already done incredible work. Even my compatriot Jorden had a fantastic year. He’s showing incredible results. I hope this is a new level for him, and not just a lucky break. Then he’ll have excellent chances on the FIDE Circuit.

But, as Bluebaum’s experience of taking the spot from Vincent Keymer showed, you also have to watch out for the backstabs from your country mates. So, I’ll be keeping a close eye on him, too.”

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 takes place from March 28 to April 16, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. Dutch GM Anish Giri took 2nd place in the tournament with 8.5/14 points.
