A mini-tournament of underwater chess was organized in anticipation of the upcoming Freestyle Chess Grand Slam final stage in Cape Town. Participants included Fabiano Caruana, Vishy Anand, Javohir Sindarov, and Hans Niemann.

The event featured players wearing swimsuits colored to match their customary over-the-board suits. Hans Niemann won the exhibition after defeating Fabiano Caruana and underwater chess specialist Mateusz Mazurkiewicz.

The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam final stage begins in Cape Town on December 8. The field includes Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Vincent Keymer, Arjun Erigaisi, Levon Aronian, Hans Niemann, Parham Maghsoodloo, and Javohir Sindarov.
