The creation of an official rating system for Chess960 was approved at the FIDE General Assembly. The deadline for implementing the system was set for June 1, 2027.

The proposal was submitted jointly by the German, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Faroe Islands chess federations, and the Irish Chess Union. The initiative noted that an official rating system was needed for the international spread of this chess variant.

Calculation methods or detailed rating regulations are currently unknown. FIDE noted that the full decisions and official documentation will be published later.

The rating system for Chess960 will become the 4th official FIDE system. Rapid and Blitz rating lists were added in 2012. Freestyle Chess has had its own ratings for Fischer Random Chess since 2025. Magnus Carlsen holds first place in this rating with more than 2900 points.
