FIDE and World Chess announced their application for the .chess domain extension. ICANN opened the opportunity to create new domain extensions for the first time since 2012.

FIDE states that the goal of creating .chess is to unite chess-related domains under a dedicated, recognized name. National federations will receive dedicated domains allocated in coordination with FIDE. Clubs, academies, organizers, platforms, media, and players will be able to register names independently.

FIDE acts as the institutional sponsor of the domain extension and will receive a share of the revenues it generates. World Chess manages the application to ICANN, funds the project, and plans to operate the extension on FIDE’s behalf.

ICANN stands for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is a global non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the internet’s domain extensions. There are more than 1,500 entries in the ICANN-approved domain extensions list, including .com, .org, .net, .ai, and others.
