Canadian WGM and streamer Nemo Zhou was playing with fans at a convention in Nevada. A man sat down to play with Nemo and told her the event was closing in half an hour at the start of the game.

During the game, the man blundered a Queen, and then his clock ran out. The man continued to think about his move after the time ran out, and Nemo began packing. Soon, the man announced his ‘surrender’, did not shake hands, and left without returning Nemo’s microphone. Zhou caught up to him and took the microphone back.

A few minutes later, the man returned to Nemo and accused her of wasting his time and of starting to leave while playing with him:

“I feel like you wasted my time! First you said we’d play after this person, then another person comes in…

I was waiting here for half an hour, and then you just rush through it?!”

Nemo apologized to the man and gave him a three-month Diamond membership on Chess.com. The man accepted the gift, insulted the streamer by showing her the middle finger, and left:

“You did waste my time.

F* you, but I hope you have fun at the convention…”

Nemo Zhou commented on the situation in a video on TikTok:

“I just wanted to say that since it was all happening live, I didn’t have much time to think and I was just trying to keep the situation from escalating.

I’m not trying to encourage rude behavior, and I’m not trying to over-apologize. It wasn’t even really about apologizing. I was just trying to keep things calm and get out of the situation ASAP…”
