Chess.com co-founders Daniel Rensch and Erik Allebest recorded a reaction to the Netflix trailer for the documentary ‘Untold: Chess Mates’ about the cheating scandal conflict between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Moke Niemann. They refuted the claim that Erik Allebest invented the theory about Hans using special cheating devices.

“The thing is, they took my quote, representing someone else’s point of view, and used it as if I said it. But they didn’t show the whole quote! I would never have said or thought that. I was just reading what someone said in Twitch chat.

I hope no one thinks I came up with this theory.”

“I hope it’s just for the trailer and to build hype. Because what Erik says is true.

When we were describing the plot there, they wanted both of us to contribute to this. So, they asked us various questions and put us in a position where we had to explain how did we get here.

So yes, Erik didn’t come up with the anal beads theory. I don’t even remember saying necessarily that about paranoia. But they definitely presented it in a way that got everyone excited for the episode.”

“UNTOLD: Chess Mates” is a Netflix documentary about the 2022 cheating scandal involving Magnus Carlsen and Hans Moke Niemann. The documentary centers on Niemann’s victory over Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup and the cheating allegations that followed. The film will premiere on Netflix on April 7.
