Magnus Carlsen explained why he chose Nihal Sarin as his opponent in the EWC 2026 Playoffs. Carlsen says Arjun Erigaisi has an uncomfortable playing style, and calls Sarin and Erigaisi very strong players.

The Esports World Cup 2026 takes place from August 11 to 15, at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in France. Nihal Sarin advanced to the Playoffs from the Lower Bracket. Magnus Carlsen defeated all opponents and advanced to the Playoffs on the first day of the Group Stage. Sarin and Carlsen will play for a spot in the EWC Semifinals on August 14.
