Co-founder of Chess.com Daniel Rensch shared his thoughts on Chinese GM Wei Yi’s chances at the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 on Twitch stream. Rensch calls Wei a dark horse, and notes that Yi may be at the peak of his career.

Co-founder of Chess.com“Interesting dark horse prediction — Wei Yi. He’s only a dark horse because people just forget how incredibly good this guy is. But don’t be surprised if Wei Yi wins the Candidates!
Maybe, Wei Yi is playing some of the best chess of his career. And we just forget that that guy has been a prodigy since before.
Obviously, he doesn’t have the global following that Hikaru does, doesn’t have the Candidates history that Fabiano has, he is not as loud as Anish Giri is on Twitter and so on. You just don’t really think of Wei Yi’s personality.
But still, I don’t know why, but I have this sneaking suspicion that Wei Yi is going to be the one walking away with the trophy.”
The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 will take place from March 28 to April 16, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. Chinese GM Wei Yi (2754) qualified for the Candidates 2026 for the first time, finishing second at the FIDE World Chess Cup 2025.
