“I don’t feel relieved that it’s over. I didn’t feel like I suffered emotionally or anything like that at the end. Sadness… that would have appeared more if I had been very close to winning.

Javokhir simply played better, and to be honest, even if he didn’t, Anish played better as well. So, I can’t say I was super close.

I think I still have the level, and if things go well, I have a chance. But that’s always the case — everyone has some chance. Although it doesn’t seem like a high chance. Everyone is very capable, and everything should work out in your favor.

Can I have a dream run like Javokhir had here? I don’t know if I can go +6 in Candidates, but if I’m in good form, I could win the tournament. I’m definitely capable of it, but will it happen? I have no idea.”

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 took place from March 28 to April 15, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. American GM Fabiano Caruana finished third in the tournament scoring 7.5/14 points.
