German GM Matthias Bluebaum shared his thoughts about the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in an interview with Lichess.org on April 12. Bluebaum says he would like to win at least one game, and notes the performance of Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov.

German GM“It would be very nice to score at least one win in such a tournament, but if it doesn’t happen — it doesn’t happen. I’ll just keep playing and try to have two more good games. If I get my chances — I’ll try to take them. But otherwise, if I don’t get a win — it’s also fine.
It’s not a fantastic performance, but it’s okay. It’s also a bit unfortunate for everyone that after round 5 tournament was kind of over — from practical sense more or less. One player has been incredibly impressive.
Sindarov’s performance is incredibly amazing. I don’t think there were many performances like that. I guess everyone counted Topalov when he had 6.5 out of 7 in one Candidates, which is very similar. He’s just winning so many games… What can you do about that? He’s just performing incredibly well. Everything is going his way. He’s lucky in the right places.
I think the first round was already a turning point for him. If he had lost then, the tournament could have turned out completely differently. Very often the first games can decide quite a lot.”
The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 takes place from March 28 to April 16, at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov leads the tournament with 9/12 points. German GM Matthias Bluebaum holds 6th place, drawing 11 games and losing one.
