Former World Champion Ding Liren commented on 2026 Norway Chess tournament. Ding says he likes the tournament format, and believes Alireza Firouzja will surpass Magnus Carlsen and win the event.

“First of all, I find the format really thrilling. The time control is very tight, so players are prone to mistakes under time pressure, making the results highly unpredictable.

And judging by the current standings, I think Firouzja will dethrone Carlsen.”

The Norway Chess 2026 takes place from May 25 to June 5, at the Deichman Bjorvika public library, Oslo. Alireza Firouzja leads the tournament, and Magnus Carlsen shares last place with Praggnanandhaa R after two rounds. 17th World Champion Ding Liren participated in Norway Chess three times, finishing last in 2024 and 2019, and withdrew from the tournament in 2018 due to a hip injury.
