The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 will be held in Weissenhaus, Germany, running from February 12 to 14. Eight players will participate in the Championship, qualifying through five paths. Women’s edition will run from February 5 to 7.
The pathways to qualification for the Open edition:
- Top-3 finishers from the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026
- 1 player from the Grenke Freestyle Chess Open 2026
- 2 players from a designated OTB or online tournament
- 1 player from the Freestyle Friday Championship 2026
- 1 player from online tournament, played between January 1 and January 15, 2027
Magnus Carlsen,
Fabiano Caruana and
Nodirbek Abdusattorov qualified by securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026 respectively.
Bibisara Assaubayeva qualified for the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 by winning an Exhibition Match with Alexandra Kosteniuk in Weissenhaus.
The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 follows the 2026 edition which took place in Weissenhaus, Germany from February 13 to 15. It was the first joint World Championship in the 960 format. Magnus Carlsen (2840) defeated Fabiano Caruana (2795) with a score of 2.5-1.5 in the Final and became the first Freestyle Chess World Champion.
